IAbout Us

Nanyang Normal University established the computer major in 1995 and then the computer department in August 1999. In March 2006, the department changed its name to School of Computer and Information Technology (SCIT), which currently has four undergraduate programs (big data and cloud computing, Internet Finance, software development, and Network Security).

  Currently, there are sixty people on its faculty and staff including twenty-one professors, twenty-eight lecturers and three experimentalists, most of whom have Bachelor’s or Doctor’s degree.

      Prominent achievements have been made in medical image processing, data mining, information security and other fields of scientific research. In the past three years, the school has been responsible for a constantly increasing number of key research projects, including three Science Foundation Programs and twenty-three scientific research projects at the provincial and ministerial level. We have published more than 300 high-quality papers in high-level international journals (such as SCI, EI etc.) and a number of professional reference books. In addition, we possess more than twenty national patents authorized and sixteen computer software copyrights.

   SCIT consists of six teaching and research sections (basic course, software and application, database and application, system structure, cloud computing, big data, network and application) and twenty-one professional laboratories, which contribute a lot to students’ comprehensive quality, professional ability and high employment rate.

II. Teaching

1. Faculty

   To develop ourselves into an institution with significant contributions, we are endeavoring to retain the best of our faculty and attract talents from home and abroad. Currently, there are twenty-one professors, two Master tutors, twenty-eight lecturers and three experimentalists in the SCIT, ten of whom with Doctor’s Degree and twenty-six with Master’s Degree.

2. Undergraduate Programs

1) Computer Science and Technology (Cloud Computing and Big Data) (four-year program)

The program aims to cultivate productive and innovative talents who are skilled in database storage design, dada mining, cloud computing and software development.

Core Courses: Data Structure; Advanced Mathematics; Operating Systems; Object-oriented Programming Language; Database Principles; Distributed Database; Computer Network; Internet Technology and Application; Cloud Computing; Cloud Storage; Cloud Security and Privacy; Data Warehouse; Data Mining.

2) Computer Science and Technology (Internet Finance) (four-year program)

The program aims to cultivate professionals with financial theory and internet technology, who are competent in the traditional financial institutions, electric commercial enterprises, internet companies, third-party payment, P2P network credit, financial institutions and other related fields.

Core Courses: Advanced Mathematics, Discrete Mathematics, Data Structures, Operating Systems, Database Theory, Computer Networks, Internet Technology and Application, Internet Financial Risk Management, Internet Platform Building and Development Practice, Internet Financial Product Design, Financial Markets and Financial Instruments.

3) Software Engineering (Software Development) (four-year program)

The program aims to cultivate senior engineering technicians who are competent in computer science and software engineering, and who have the comprehensive ability to work in administrative departments, enterprises or institutions.

Core Courses: Object-oriented Programming, Discrete Mathematics, Data Structure, Computer Principles, Operating System, Computer Network, Database Principle, Java program Design, Software Engineering, Software Evaluation and Test, Software Quality Assurance.

4)  Software Engineering (Internet Security)    (four-year program)

The program aims to cultivate compound talents in computer technology and information security technology, preparing students for practical skills in computer information system and network system.

Core Courses: Object-oriented Programming, Data Structure, Operating System, Computer Network, Cryptography, Intrusion Detection and Defense, Discrete Mathematics, Database, Software Engineering, Coding Theory, Information Security, Network Security, Virus Analysis and Control, Security Protocols and Standards.

3. Excellent Course Construction

After years of teaching reform and experience, the teachers accumulated rich experience in teaching and formed the theoretical and the practical teaching system with its unique characteristics. Since 2009, the school offered many high quality courses (Database System, Java Program Design, Data Structure and some other courses) and the corresponding teaching methods, teaching plans, teaching outlines, exercises and the reference answer, simulation test paper and answer, the experiment outline etc., which are convenient for teachers and students to learn and search information.

4. Teaching Characteristics

1) Combination of Theory and Practice

The school offers general education curriculum, basic courses in computer science, core courses, extension curriculum, practical courses, greatly improving students’ practical ability and innovation ability.

In order to improve the students’ practical ability, innovation ability and entrepreneurship, SCIT has been encouraging students to participate in College Student Practice Creation Program (SPCP), scientific research, technological development and some other innovative activities.

3 Off-campus Software Training

SCIT established fifteen off-campus practice bases in Beijing, Shanghai, Nanjing, Suzhou, Shenzhen, Zhengzhou and some other cities, which greatly improved students’ professional practical ability and employment rate.

4 Setting up Experimental Areas

SCIT has established many innovation experimental areas and practice bases. Currently three undergraduate training teams have been set up: ACM team, innovative undergraduate team and software design and development team. Guided by three doctors, these teams aim to encourage students to participate in competitions of all levels, so as to improve their learning interest and creative ability.

3) Various Teaching Methods

In teaching, SCIT adopted effective teaching methods and multi-assessment system so that optimal teaching results can be achieved.

4) Focus on Improving Teachers’ Professional Quality

To improve teachers’ professional quality, SCIT requires teachers to make further study and participate in practical training together with students, which not only deepens their communication with students, but also broadens their horizon, making them learn a lot about effective teaching methods and professional knowledge.

III. Research  

Recently, SCIT has 8 research groups, which are composed of doctors and professors, and mainly study digital image, video capture, processing, analysis, retrieval and management and multimedia information processing and digital image security. Great achievements have been made in content retrieval, sentiment analysis, image measurement, digital watermarking, natural image analysis, medical image feature extraction, computer-aided diagnosis, data mining etc.

In recent years, the school has been responsible for three national science foundation projects, one project funded by Chinese postdoctoral scientific research fund and ten provincial key research projects. We have published a number of professional reference books and more than 300 high-quality papers in important academic journals including Physics in Medicine and Biology, Medical Physics, Mathematical and Computer Modelling, Future Generation Computer Systems, Technology in Cancer Research & Treatment, Academic Radiology, Optical Engineering etc. In addition, we possess more than 20 national patents and 15 computer software copyrights.

      We have well-equipped multi-media classrooms and laboratories to meet the needs of teaching and learning.

V. Campus Life

On the basis of professional practice, we regularly hold professional skill contests and set up ACM programming team, software design and development team, volunteer group and some other groups.
