School of Literature and History
About us
Founded in 1951, School of Literature and History is one of the earliest schools in Nanyang Normal University. In 2015, Department of Chinese Language and Literature and Department of History merged into School of Literature and History. Now it is the biggest school with seventy-two staff and over 3,000 undergraduates. Furthermore, among the staff there are nine professors, eighteen associate professors and forty-three lecturers, forty-six of whom hold doctoral degree and three of whom are Outstanding (Wolong) Scholars. In terms of academic achievements, the school has founded a provincial research base of Humanities and Social Sciences, and the faculty members have undertaken fifteen National Social Sciences Fund Projects and over thirty provincial-grade and ministry-level fund projects. Also, the teachers have published thirty books and over 500 research papers, twenty of which are indexed in country's top journals, ninety included in CSSCI (Chinese Social Sciences Citation Index) and more than twenty papers indexed by Information Center for Social Sciences of Renmin University of China.
The school offers five undergraduate programs: 1. Chinese Language and Literature; 2.Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Language; 3.History; 4. Theater Film and TV Literature; 5. Cultural Industry Management; 6. Chinese Education. The school faculty members are respectively affiliated with ten different teaching and research sections, namely, teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Language, Chinese Language and Literature, Ancient Chinese Literature, Modern and Contemporary Chinese Literature, Chinese, Theater Film and TV Literature,Foreign Literature,Literary Theory, Chinese History, world history institute, Culture Industry Management. And three experimental and training centers have been established for theater and video post-production,movie and TV appreciation and multifunctional training.

1. Chinese Language and Literature (provincial characteristic program of Henan)
Duration: four years
Degree Awarded: Bachelor of Arts
Goals for student development:
Basic knowledge and skills of the Chinese language and literature; the quality of innovation; ability of primary scientific research; to apply knowledge learned to teaching Chinese at junior or senior schools, to do journalism, office secretary and other related work.

2. Theater Film and TV Literature
Duration: four years
Degree Awarded: Bachelor of Fine Arts
Goals for student development:
Complete mastery of basic knowledge of theater, film and TV; to adapt to the development of cultural industry; ability of reviewing and designing theater and video; ability of theater and film research; to work on theater and video production and their communication; the quality of innovation; ability of primary scientific research; to apply knowledge learned to teaching Chinese at junior or senior schools, to do journalism, office secretary and other related work.

3. Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Language
Duration: four years
Degree Awarded: Bachelor of Arts
Goals for student development:
Taking into consideration the connections between the university’s disciplines and the increasing closeness of China with the world, this program enables students to develop high-level bilingual skills (English and Chinese) and the ability to apply them. Meanwhile, It also seeks to equip students with Chinese and foreign cultures. This program prepares students after graduation to become specialists in teaching Chinese to speakers of other Language and cultural exchange.

4. History (provincial characteristic program)
Duration: four years
Degree Awarded: Bachelor of History
Goals for student development:
This program aims to develop students’ spirit to innovate and ability of learning, practice and fitting the constantly changing environment; basic knowledge, theories and skills of history; basic professional qualities of being teachers and modern education thoughts. It prepares them after graduation for teaching.
Courses: Ancient Chinese History, History Theory, Modern and Contemporary Chinese History (1842-1949 and 1949 to today respectively), The History of People’s Republic of China, Middle Ages History of the World, Modern History of the World (16th century-20th World War One), Early Contemporary History of the World (World War One-World War Two), Contemporary History of the World (After World War Two), Selections of Chinese Historical Works, Teaching Methodology of History, Outline of Historiography, Conspectus of Chinese Archaeology, Historical Bibliography.
5. Cultural Industry Management
Duration: four years
Degree Awarded: Bachelor of Management
Goals for student development:
This program enables students to develop solid foundation in culture and management and promotes their spirit of humanities. It prepares them after graduation for brokerage, planning, marketing, public relations and management work in diverse social professions in the area of cultural industry or teaching and scientific research in the fields of education, research.

6. Chinese Education
Duration: three years
Goals for student development:
This program aims to equip students with basic knowledge in Chinese language and literature and computer science; good mastery of practical Chinese teaching skills and basic educational theory; some regularities and methods of education and teaching; ability to pass College English Test-band Three and to organize and manage classes. This program prepares students after graduation to become teachers of Chinese or related subjects or head teachers; it seeks to establish a foundation for students’ continued higher degree.
