On the evening of December 6, invited by School of Mathematics and Statistics, Cheng Bin, senior researcher of Finland Meteorological Institute, delivered a special report entitled Application of Mathematics in the Study of Cryosphere Physics online. The meeting was presided over by Tan Bing, vice dean of School of Mathematics and Statistics. President Wang Shunqin, teachers and students attended the meeting.

Combining his own learning and research experiences, Cheng Bin emphasized the importance of mathematical theories and methods to scientific research, and explained in simple terms from the numerical model of thermal dynamics of ice and snow and the design of Xuelong II research ship that mathematical language can simply describe complicated practical problems, and mathematical theories and methods can efficiently solve scientific problems. He also pointed out that finding problems is more important than solving them. He hoped the students should think hard, open their eyes and grow up to be useful to the country and have no regrets about themselves.

Cheng Bin’s presentation was vivid and humorous, which not only made students deeply realize the importance and practicability of mathematics, but also cleared away the “fog” in their professional study and future planning.

After the report, Tan Bing emphasized the importance of learning basic mathematics theories. Wang Shunqin communicated with Cheng Bin on the cultivation of mathematics professionals and students’ study abroad. The teachers and students at the meeting had a heated discussion with Cheng Bin on the problems of scientific research and polar science.

The meeting not only deepened the students’ professional cognition, but also aroused their motivation and confidence to consolidate the professional foundation, which has an important guiding significance for the professional construction and talent training of School of Mathematics and Statistics.
