Recently, Professor Liu Yufang, former Vice President of Henan Normal University, was invited to deliver a special report titled “University Teachers and Scientific Research” for faculty and students at our university. The report was chaired by Li Ting, Director of the Office of Science and Technology, and was attended by faculty representatives from science and engineering schools across the university.

Professor Liu elaborated on the core propositions of “what is scientific research, why do scientific research, and what does scientific research aim to achieve”. He emphasized that scientific research in universities in the new era should adopt a broader perspective and return to its original purpose of nurturing talent. By fostering an innovative atmosphere, refining research directions, strengthening research teams, and building high-quality platforms, universities should serve economic and social development, construct a favorable innovation ecosystem, and earnestly shoulder the epochal responsibility of the Four Orientations (i.e., orienting toward the world’s scientific frontiers, the main economic battlefield, the nation’s major needs, and people’s health and lives). During the report, Professor Liu systematically explained the career development paths for university faculty and methods to enhance research capabilities. Drawing from his own experience in research management, he provided guidance on the writing standards and strategies for National Natural Science Foundation of China project applications.

After the report, Vice President Yao Lunguang held discussions and exchanges with Professor Liu regarding the application and management of National Natural Science Foundation projects. Professor Liu pointed out that a serious attitude toward application is crucial, perseverance is key, and researchers must plan and prepare early. Vice President Yao stated that our university will leverage its disciplinary strengths based on its actual conditions and continue to deepen communication and exchanges with sister institutions, striving for breakthroughs in project applications.
