The library ofNanyangNormalUniversitywas founded in 1951. Now it has 65 staffs and 8 offices, namely the general office, the purchasing and cataloguing department, the circulation department, the periodical department, the reference and inquiry department, the technology department, the special collection department and the teaching and research room of information retrieval. It consists of two buildings, the old library and the new library. The old library lies in the center of the eastern campus covering 10,480 square meters.

The new library came to use in 2014, which, 36,000 square meters in area, is situated in the western campus. With sophisticated equipments and the provincial leading modern management it has promoted its services all-roundly. It takes the unified entrance control and open-stack for borrowing and reading. It holds 5,400 seats, nearly 2,000 of them in the public reading section. It provides considerate services, such as self-borrowing and returning, self-printing and photocopying, automatic distribution of seats, 24-hour self-returning, electronic newspaper, bag electronic storage, public inquiry and other services. It continues subscribing 11 great Chinese and foreign databases and purchases 8 new foreign databases, including SD, Wiley, IEEE. Its new edition webpage attracts more than 14 million visitors. The new library renders fast and efficient digital services with the assistance of advanced broadband network and wireless LAN for all teachers and students in the university. Each week it remains open nearly 100 hours.

By the end of 2014, the library has had 1,714,200 books, including 144,200 ones newly-bought that year, 1,402 categories of periodicals, 1,004,100 kinds of e-books, 20,000 of them newly added. Its collection is emphasized on normal education and local service and covers science, engineering, humanities, social science, management and other subjects and fields.

The library furnishes rooms for reading thread-bound ancient books,Chuand Han cultures, local documents and electronic resources. And it offers many other rooms for the research ofChuand Han cultures, Han’s stone carvings, jade culture, writer group of Nanyang, four sages in Nanyang, Feng Youlan (a famous philosopher), Nanyang local documents and Quyi culture. Besides them, there are personalized audio-visual studios, the academic meeting room and the academic hall.

For learning, teaching and research, the library conducts various kinds of training lectures and provides active services on reference consultation, inter-library loan, document transmission, dissertation advisory, retrieval help and other aspects.

In the recent years, especially from 1991 to 2015, the library’s scientific management, best quality service and high-level scientific research have helped it win numerous all-level awards.

In order to adapt itself to the new situation, to develop itself into an institution with significant contributions, the library is endeavoring to offer substantial support to teaching and academic inquiries. In order to make itself become a high-level institution for information service and academic exchange with the best atmosphere, technology and service, the library will plan to improve its facilities and librarians’ ability, enrich its resources and better its services. In order to offer perfect knowledge, the library will adopt the method of system management to build a full functional body consisting of purchasing and cataloguing system, circulation system, newspaper and periodical management system, technology support system, reference and consultation system, administration system and other systems.
