About us
With the advancing step of Nanyang Normal University (NYNU) and the reforming of the national higher education, School of Music is developing rapidly. The school is the first to set up the music major and has the most qualified teaching staff in the southwest of Henan. It has fostered widely acclaimed graduates, most of whom are working in the teaching field throughout the country.
The school boasts of its highly competitive faculty with more than 80% teachers having got Master’s degree. For years, the school has adhered to teaching-centeredness, established strict teaching management and regulations, and paid close attention to each teaching link from preparing, lecturing, tutoring, correcting, managing, to assessing. In order to guarantee the teaching quality, the school has teachers with intermediate professional title or above take on the teaching tasks. In order to improve the professional level of the faculty, the school regularly assigns teachers to go to prestigious universities for further study, 80% of whom have participated in the training; meanwhile the school often invites distinguished musicians or scholars to give lectures such as Hu Songhua,Ye Peiying, Qin Xu, Zhang Zhentao, Wu Qihui, Ma Zixing, Zhou Wei, Li Youping, Zhu Jingxiu,Tang Guiqing, Du Yaxiong, Paolo coni (from Italian Girolamo Frescobald National Music School), and Bonfatti Gregory (from Adria Music School). These lectures expand the teachers’ academic horizon and accelerate the school’s teaching reform.
Currently, the school has three four-year undergraduate programs: Musicology, Music Performance and Choreography. In 1997, with increasing enrollment, NYNU attached more importance to the development of the school, investing a lot of manpower and material resources, purchasing modern teaching equipment, and greatly improving the teaching condition. The school now has more than 300 pianos, four concert grand and baby grand pianos, one advanced-equipped lab for musical instrument playing method, one computer music classroom, one exclusive music hall, three special dance training rooms, one recording studio, two chorus skills rooms, a lot of musical instruments and costumes for art practice.
At the beginning of 2006, Music Teaching Building was completed and came into use, covering more than 10000 square meters with multiple functions and advanced equipment.
Since 2003, School of Music has declared eighty four research projects at all levels, including four national ones. Besides, there are fourteen accomplished pieces(sets) of art works, thirty six awarded art works, thirty one monographs, 537 academic papers，including 112 published in national and international leading academic journals, such as China Musicology, Music Research, China Music, People’s Music, Huang Zhong. Some of the projects and papers have had a profound influence on society and some have been awarded a prize at or above provincial level. With joint efforts of the school leadership and all the teachers and students, the school has won more prizes in the contests of vocal and instrumental music, among which there are seven national prizes, thirty first prizes, twenty two second and twenty three third at or above provincial level, thirty first prizes, thirty second and forty two third at prefectural level. The school has been among the best during the 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th and the 13th College Students Arts Festival in Henan, of which it has won the excellence organization award in 2004. The art troupe of the school frequently conducts art performances in the rural or mountainous areas, which has been honorably awarded by the Central Commission of China Communist Youth League many times and highly praised by the local people.

Undergraduate programs
Choreography:
Aim: This program aims to cultivate the students with abilities of choreography, dancing education and dancing performance for colleges and universities, professional groups and troupes.
Duration: a 4-year undergraduate program
Degree awarded: Bachelor of Fine Arts
Course: Choreography, Grounding of Classical Ballet, Grounding of Chinese Classical Dance, Chinese Folk Dance, Body Rhyme, History of Chinese and Western Dance, Dance Aesthetics, Dance Appreciation, Analysis of Foreign Representative Dance Works, Music Basis and Dancing Music and Multimedia etc.
Music Performance:
Aim: This program aims to cultivate the students with professional performance and the ones for enterprises and institutions.
Duration: a 4-year undergraduate program
Degree awarded: Bachelor of Fine Arts
Course: Basic Theory of Music, Harmonic and Ear Training, Harmony, Song Composition, Piano Accompaniment, Piano, Vocal Music, Choral Conducting, Instrumental Music, Introduction to Art, Appreciation of Chinese and Western Music History, Orchestration, Music Works and Analysis, Italian Phonetics, Polyphony, National Folk Music, Music Aesthetics, Dancing, Music Teaching Course, History of Opera and English Language and Literature etc.
Musicology:
Aim: This program aims to cultivate music teachers for high schools.
Duration: a 4-year educational undergraduate program
Degree awarded: Bachelor of Fine Arts

Faculty
School of Music has a group of teachers with diversified professional background, including thirty eight Master’s degree holders, three doctors, two Academic Pacesetters of the Education Department of Henan Province, one provincial Teaching Celebrity, two NYNU Wolong scholars and one provincial teaching model. At present, there are sixty five teachers in total, of whom five are professors and fourteen are associate professors.

Research
Based on the full excavation of the local culture, the school has formed four stable directions: Henan Local Opera, Henan Quyi, Nanyang Folk Song, and The Han Dynasty Music and Dance.
