On the evening of December 5, invited by School of Mathematics and Statistics, Lei Ruibo, researcher of the Polar Research Center of China and deputy director of the Key Laboratory of Polar Science of the Ministry of Natural Resources, delivered online a special report entitled Drifting in North Pole: Man's Feat in Tackling Climate Change. The meeting was presided over by Tan Bing, vice dean of School of Mathematics and Statistics. Teachers and students of School of Mathematics and Statistics attended the meeting.

Lei Ruibo firstly introduced the nature of Polar Research Center of China and related bases in the polar expedition, the profound impact of polar sea ice on global climate, the history of China's polar research, the great contributions of the former and present scientists to the cause of polar research, and the challenges and opportunities faced by polar science, revealing the mystery of polar research. Then, he explained the significance of MOSAic international climate multidisciplinary drifting ice station project for polar research, and that China, as an important partner of MOSAiC, led the construction of the sea ice mass balance buoy array. Finally, he emphasized the interdisciplinary integration of polar science and the important role of mathematical methods in the optimization of climate model, weather and sea ice prediction model.

After the report, Tan expanded the mathematical knowledge and methods involved in the report, stressed again the importance of mathematics as a basic subject and research tool, and encouraged students to consolidate the foundation of the subject and improve their professional quality. The teachers at the meeting had an in-depth exchange with Lei Ruibo on the problems encountered in the application of the National Natural Science Foundation project.

The smooth development of this report not only broadens the knowledge and academic vision of teachers and students of the School of Mathematics and Statistics, but also stimulates students' interest and enthusiasm in learning professional knowledge, which helps to promote the discipline connotation construction of the School of Mathematics and Statistics and improve the quality of talent training.
