[Lecture] The Interaction Between Ionized Hydrogen Regions (H II Regions) and Star Formation in the Milky Way

Introduction to the Lecturer: Dr. Zhang Siju is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Department of Astronomy, University of Chile, where he collaborates with Professor Guido Garay on observational research into massive star formation. He received his PhD in 2020 from the Marseille Astrophysics Laboratory (LAM) in France. From 2021 to 2023, he conducted postdoctoral research at the Kavli Institute for Astronomy and Astrophysics at Peking University. His research focuses primarily on utilizing observational data from advanced international radio telescopes (such as ALMA, NOEMA, APEX, and the IRAM 30m telescope) to systematically study massive star formation and its feedback processes within the Milky Way.
Introduction to the Lecture: Massive stars form in extremely cold molecular clouds with temperatures of tens of Kelvin. After their birth, they release intense ultraviolet radiation that ionizes the surrounding parental molecular gas, creating ionized hydrogen (H II) regions with temperatures of about 10,000 Kelvin. This feedback process has a profound impact on the structural evolution of the surrounding environment and subsequent star formation. This lecture will present research progress based on observations from ALMA and other large radio telescopes, focusing on the interaction between H II regions and their surrounding dense molecular gas, and the role of this process in massive star formation at different evolutionary stages. Our research shows that the feedback from H II regions is remarkably complex; its impact strongly depends on local physical conditions, making it difficult to simply categorize its role in massive star formation as either “promoting” or “suppressing”.
