From October 17 to 19, the “2025 Ecological Security Seminar and Young Scientists Salon for the Water Source Area of the South-to-North Water Diversion Middle Route Project” was held in the Academic Exchange Center on the first floor of NYNU’s Science and Technology Building. The forum brought together experts and scholars from over ten renowned domestic universities and research institutes, such as Nanjing Institute of Soil Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Institute of Agricultural Resources and Regional Planning, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Wuhan Botanical Garden, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Wuhan University of Technology, Northwest A&F University, and Southwest Forestry University. Participants engaged in in-depth discussions centering on ecological security challenges in the core water source area of the South-to-North Water Diversion Middle Route Project, focusing on key issues such as pollution remediation, risk assessment, ecological function protection, new material applications, and collaborative innovation. President Luo Yongsong and Vice Presidents Xie Haiquan and Yao Lunguang attended the opening ceremony, which was chaired by Vice President Yao Lunguang.
President Luo Yongsong extended a warm welcome to all attending leaders, experts, and scholars, and briefly introduced the university’s development history. He emphasized that NYNU focuses on better serving the national South-to-North Water Diversion Project strategy and local economic and social development, with clear goals of “renaming as a university and becoming a doctoral degree-granting unit”. Guided by the development philosophy of “Strengthening Teacher Education and Consolidating Applied Disciplines”, the university coordinates and promotes disciplinary development, talent cultivation, and scientific research to continuously open up new prospects. He expressed hope that this forum would serve as an opportunity to strengthen cooperation with various institutions in related fields, further promote the connotative and high-quality development of the university’s relevant disciplines, and contribute more actively to local economic development.
Professor Wu Yonghong from Nanjing Institute of Soil Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Researcher Yang Jianjun from Institute of Agricultural Resources and Regional Planning, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, and Researcher Liu Wenzhi from Wuhan Botanical Garden, Chinese Academy of Sciences delivered academic reports on frontier research in water and soil pollution control.
During the conference, a roundtable forum on ecological protection in the water source area and a frontier interdisciplinary innovation salon for young scientists were also held. The participating experts provided specific direction and momentum for NYNU’s research on ecological security in the water source area of the South-to-North Water Diversion Middle Route Project, and engaged in extensive discussions on future development trends and challenges.
On October 19, Vice President Yao Lunguang led the participating experts on a field research and investigation to the Taocha Headwork Dam, the Henan Provincial Field Station for Wetland Ecosystems of the Middle Route Headworks, the Henan Provincial Ecological Environment Monitoring and Emergency Center for the South-to-North Water Diversion Headworks, and the Danjiangkou Reservoir.
