On the evening of November 12th, at the invitation of the School of Mathematics and Statistics, Professor Lauri Arvola from the University of Helsinki in Finland, gave two reports titled Chemical Responses of Small Lakes to Atmospheric and Catchment Drivers over Four Decades and Water Quality Monitoring of Finnish Inland Waters: 50 Years Perspective in the lecture hall on the third floor of the Science and Technology Building. Core teachers and students from the School of Mathematics and Statistics and the Henan Province Applied Mathematics Center attended the report meeting. The reports were presided over by Fan Yingzhe, vice dean of the School of Mathematics and Statistics.

Professor Lauri Arvolas research focuses on water quality monitoring and lake ecosystems. In his reports, he emphasized the importance of water quality monitoring for ecological protection. Then he reviewed the 50-year history of inland water quality monitoring in Finland and demonstrated the monitoring and changes of water quality in various lakes and rivers in Finland over the past 50 years using charts. Finally, Professor Lauri Arvola introduced the regulations and laws on water resource management issued by the Finnish government in recent years and discussed the future development trends of water quality monitoring.

After the reports, the attending teachers and students engaged in a discussion with Professor Lauri Arvola about water ecological safety monitoring and protection issues. They expressed that not only did they broaden their international perspective, but they also gained a deeper understanding of the significance of professional knowledge such as mathematics and statistics in scientific research.

The reports will have a positive impact on enhancing the professional interest of students in the School of Mathematics and Statistics, the connotation construction of disciplines, international exchange and cooperation, and the cultivation of high-quality talents.
