On the afternoon and the evening of July 14th, Professor Cheng Weihu and Professor Xue Liugen from Beijing University of Technology and Professor Deng Chunyuan from South China Normal University were invited to our university to give lectures entitled The Structure of Skew Generalized Normal Distribution and Its Application, Empirical Likelihood for Partially Linear Single-index Models with Missing Observations, and On Black Operator Matrices. The meeting was presided over by dean Wang Shunqin and attended by a number of backbone faculty and students.
Cheng Weihu noted that in engineering practice, the distribution of many random variables follows or approximately follows normal distribution, but it is difficult to effectively fit the data with the characteristics of skew peak and thick tail (or thin tail), and the construction of skew generalized normal distribution with excellent statistical characteristics can make the fitting of data distribution more accurate and effective, which is convenient for development and utilization. He also analyzed the opportunities and challenges for the development of statistics.
Based on his own research experience and classic cases, Xue Liugen comprehensively analyzed the semi-parametric model and its application in econometrics, survival analysis and its application in biomedicine, large-scale data analysis and its application in financial engineering, etc. He combined with the development of disciplines in our university and put forward valuable suggestions for the application and construction of master's degree authorized unit in statistics.
Combining with the current research situation of basic mathematics in China, Deng Chunyuan analyzed in-depth and in detail the research progress of operator matrix theory, generalized inverse perturbation analysis and application of operators, positive operator theory on Banach lattice, operator partitioning technique, application of operator spectrum theory in Grassmannia research, matrix perturbation analysis and generalized inverse theory of operators. According to the training experience of the master students in the discipline teaching (mathematics) specialty of South China Normal University, Deng put forward some guiding opinions on the development of the training program of the master education in our university.
Finally, the three experts conducted in-depth communication and exchanges with the teachers and the students on the application of national self-science fund, statistics specialty construction, master’s degree application, and students’ postgraduate entrance examination, etc. They also put forward practical suggestions and encouraged the young teachers and the students to be brave and firm in scientific research.
