[Lecture One] The Crime of Murder in U.S.

Lecturer: Prof. Ofer Raban (University of Oregon, USA)

Introduction to the Lecture: This lecture will cover: 1. Core definition of murder (common law foundations); 2. Main classifications and subjective elements (Mens Rea) of murder; 3. Grading of murder (first-degree vs. second-degree); 4. Key legal doctrines and judicial cases; 5. Sentencing considerations (application of the death penalty).

Introduction to the Speaker: Ofer Raban is a Tenured Professor at the University of Oregon School of Law and a Senior Fellow of the Elmer Sahlstrom Chair. His teaching and research focus on constitutional law, criminal procedure, and criminal law. He holds a B.A. in Philosophy from City College of New York (1994), a J.D. from Harvard Law School (1999), and a D.Phil. in Legal Philosophy from the University of Oxford (2003), where he received the Law Faculty Award. He has authored two monographs and published over 60 articles in the field of criminal justice, addressing the relationship between constitutional theory and judicial philosophy, and analyzing complex criminal case law. His research emphasizes a dynamic view of judicial development, using detailed case analysis to reveal the evolution of procedural and substantive law.



[Lecture Two] Becoming a Courtroom Expert – Moot Court Debate and Theoretical Preparation

Lecturer: Prof. Han Yang (Beijing International Studies University)

Date: October 16, 2025 (Thursday)

Time: 19:00-21:00

Venue: Middle District Auditorium

Introduction to the Lecture: The lecture is structured into four parts: 1. Pre-trial preparation; 2. Simulated interrogation of the defendant; 3. Examination of witnesses and victims; 4. Simulated courtroom debate.

Introduction to the Speaker: Han Yang, Ph.D. in Law, is a professor at the School of Law and Political Science of Beijing International Studies University. She earned her doctorate from China University of Political Science and Law and completed postdoctoral research at the Institute of Law, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. She has been a visiting scholar at the University of Bordeaux IV, France. Her research covers criminal procedure law and criminal law. She has presided over multiple research projects, published five monographs, three translated works, and over 30 academic papers, including several in core journals. She is a member of the China Criminal Procedure Law Society and a council member of the Beijing Tourism Law Society.
