[Lecture One] Chemical Responses of Small Lakes to Atmospheric and Catchment Drivers over Four Decades
Speaker: Prof. Lauri Arvola (University of Helsinki, Finland)
Date: November 12, 2024(Tuesday)
Time: 18:00-19:30
Venue: Lecture Hall, 3rd Floor, Science & Technology Building
Lecture Content: Since the end of the 1980s, extensive lake and river water browning has been reported across Europe and North America, a phenomenon often interpreted as a result of recovery from acidification, and warmer and wetter climate as well as changes in land-use. This talk addresses the following questions:
• Does browning progress uniformly in the studied lakes as several previous studies have indicated?
• Have base cation concentrations decreased as changes in their deposition suggest?
•And finally, is the acidification still proceeding, or do the lakes indicate any chemical recovery from acidification as some recent results from North America and northern Europe suggest?
[Lecture Two] Water Quality Monitoring of Finnish Inland Waters: 50 years Perspective
Speaker: Prof. Lauri Arvola (University of Helsinki, Finland)
Date: November 12, 2024(Tuesday)
Time: 19:30-21:00
Venue: Lecture Hall, 3rd Floor, Science & Technology Building
Lecture Content:
Agriculture is nowadays mostly responsible for P and N loading, but forestry seems to be almost as important source as agriculture is important to focus on diffuse loading and erosion; P concentrations have shown decreasing trends but N concentrations have usually increased; Climate warming has already modified conditions which need to consider in monitoring and water management (e.g. browning of surface waters); Other chemicals such as heavy metals, medicines, pesticides, herbicides, pathogens and micro- and nanoscale plastic particles have to be monitored as well, which is a challenging task for monitoring.
Introduction to the Speaker: Lauri Arvola, professor of the University of Helsinki, chairman of the Expert Committee of the Finnish Water Quality Monitoring Center, chairman of the Finnish Lake Association, member of the Finnish Environmental Center, and the recipient of the Finnish Cultural Foundation’s Lifetime Achievement Award. He has published 149 papers and co-authored books, with a total citation count of 7343 and an H-index of 48.
