[Lecture 1] Application of Ecological Technology of Constructed Wetland, Advantages and Disadvantages and Improvement Measures
Lecturer: Professor Yang Lei, Sun Yat-sen University, Taiwan
Date: December 22, 2023 (Friday)
Time: 8:30-9:30 a.m.
Venue: Room 305, Eastern Library
Introduction to the lecture: In order to prevent the existing natural wetlands from continuing to be harmed by all kinds of waste water, in addition to using environmental engineering technology to strengthen the treatment of various types of waste water, we can also use the “ecological engineering technology” that is beneficial to human society and the natural environment to plan and design a wastewater treatment artificial wetland, strengthen the function of wetland water purification, assist in the treatment of waste water, and protect natural wetlands from pollution. However, if high-concentration and high-pollution wastewater is arbitrarily discharged into the constructed wetland, it may still exceed its carrying capacity, and cause the death of organisms in the constructed wetland, which will seriously affect its treatment effect. At this time, it is necessary to add pre-treatment equipment, or change to enhanced constructed wetland planning and design. Other improvements include the use of vertical flow constructed wetlands, mixed constructed wetlands, French-style constructed wetlands, inter-gravel aeration methods, and improved filler materials in constructed wetlands.
About the lecturer: Professor Yang Lei received his Ph.D. in environmental engineering from the School of Civil Engineering, Purdue University of USA in 1990. He is currently a full-time professor in the Department of Marine Environment and Engineering at Sun Yat-sen University (Taiwan), and has been the director of the Water Resources Research Center of Sun Yat-sen University since 2004. In addition, Professor Yang was appointed as a visiting researcher at the Institute of Hydrobiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2012, honorary director of the Engineering Research Center for Tropical and Subtropical Water Ecological Engineering of the Ministry of Education of Jinan University in 2022, and an adjunct professor at Nanyang Normal University in 2023. In addition to being one of the few scholars and experts engaged in marine pollution prevention and control technology in Taiwan, Professor Yang Lei is also a senior expert in the research and practical work of constructed wetland wastewater treatment technology and wetland restoration and restoration ecological engineering technology in Taiwan, and has made great contributions to the protection, conservation and restoration of natural wetlands in Taiwan, as well as wetland environmental education.
